The South African, who won the race in 2009, finished in 15th place after getting lost.
He lost more than 20 minutes due to navigation problems. As a result, De Villiers and his German co-driver, Dirk von Zitzewitz lie 30 minutes and 22 seconds adrift of overall leader and race-favourite Stephane Peterhansel.
Last year's Dakar winner, Nasser Al-Attiyah, won yesterday’s third stage and is now second in the overall standings.
