Giniel de Villiers consolidated his second overall place in the Dakar Rally after finishing fourth in the 10th stage of the race in Argentina yesterday. But the South African, who won the event in 2009, lost ground on overall leader Stephane Peterhansel, who is now 52 minutes ahead. De Villiers has, however, managed to stretch his lead over third-placed Russian Leonid Novitskiy to more than 16 minutes.
Meanwhile, Sarel van Biljon, who had seemingly withdrawn after struggling to complete the ninth stage, pushed ahead in the quads division. Van Biljon overcame torrid conditions to win the eighth stage in his category on Saturday, climbing to third overall ahead of the rest day at the midweek stage of the race. In the bikes division, Riaan van Niekerk retained 14th place overall, while Darryl Curtis dropped back to 18th place overall.
