Bloemfontein - One of the victims in an alleged gay bashing incident that happened at a garage in Langenhoven Park, Bloemfontein on Friday, March 1, has learnt that the suspect is allegedly a police officer from Sasolburg.

The 31-year-old man said he, his brother and his brother’s boyfriend were waiting for their food order when a “big man who looks like a rugby player” attacked them out of the blue. He says his brother was hit first and fell to the ground. When he attempted to intervene he was also knocked to the ground, kicked and beaten.

The 34-year-old brother spent an entire week in Pelonomi hospital, allegedly with a skull fracture and bleeding on the brain. He was discharged on Friday.

The victim claims police have identified the suspect from CCTV footage taken from the garage as a policeman from Sasolburg. The brothers initially opened an assault case but said police had upgraded the charge to attempted murder after witnessing the footage.

Police spokesperson Chaka Marope says he cannot confirm whether or not the suspect is a policeman. He says an arrest is imminent and further details will then be made available.

The brothers are consulting with a lawyer about the merits of proceeding with a civil case.
