South African swimming legend succumbs to breast cancer─── 13:32 Tue, 02 Apr 2013
South African swimming great Karen Muir has passed away. The Kimberley-born swimmer lost her battle against breast cancer at the age of 60.
Muir became the youngest person to break a sporting world record in any swimming discipline when she swam the 110 yards in 1:08.7 at ASA National Junior Championships in Blackpool, England at the age of 12 years, 10 months and 25 days.
During her career she set 15 backstroke world records in the 100m, 200m, 110 yards and 220 yards. She also won 22 South African Championships and three US National Championships.
Due to the sporting boycott imposed on South Africa, she was unfortnately never able to compete in the Olympics.
1980 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
