Lappies back, Watts starts for Cheetahs against Reds

Bloemfontein – Lappies Labuschagne will make a welcome return to the park when he runs out for the Toyota Cheetahs against the Reds in Bloemfontein Saturday. The exciting flanker has been out of action since injuring his elbow against the Southern Kings in Bloemfontein.

Following last weekend’s upset against a classy Hurricanes side; the Cheetahs have been hard at work trying to rectify their errors from last week. One of the biggest was the Cheetahs were nowhere at the breakdown and thus a lot of their good attacking possession was targeted and stolen by the men from Wellington. Coach Naka Drotské has admitted this was a particular problem and it is an area they have focussed on this week.

Furthermore, he says it was not a matter of not being physical enough at the breakdown; it was more a case of not enough cleaners arriving at the breakdowns.

Elgar Watts will get his first start in the number 10 jersey following an impressive twenty minute cameo last weekend. Watts immediately added spark and another dimension to the Cheetahs attack when he came on.

Burton Francis loses his place in the match-day 22 altogether with Riaan Smit returning from injury. Smit will start off the bench.

The Cheetahs backline were under a lot pressure last week to defend the dangerous Hurricanes back-three, however  the Reds wingers Digby Ioane and Rod Davies are just as dangerous, but more empathises will be placed on disrupting Will Genia and Quade Cooper at 9 and 10. Both this players are two of the most dangerous in their positions and can create something out of nothing.

The Reds forwards can be potentially dangerous, but it’s safe to say they are nowhere near the same quality as the Cheetahs. With James Horwill side-lined, the men from Brisbane will have their work cut-out for them.

We can expect the Cheetahs to kick quite a bit in order to neutralise the Reds backline. The same was tried last weekend against the Hurricanes, however, Burton Francis had a bad day at the office and the execution was dismal. Elgar Watts is a brilliant attacking player and has a good calm head on his shoulders. He should be man enough to general the backline.

The Toyota Cheetahs team is as follows -

15. Hennie Daniller, 14. Willie le Roux, 13. Johann Sadie, 12. Robert Ebersohn, 11. Raymond Rhule, 10. Elgar Watts, 9. Piet van Zyl, 8. Philip van der Walt, 7. Lappies Labuschagne, 6. Heinrich Brüssow, 5. Francois Uys, 4. Lood de Jager, 3. Lourens Adriaanse, 2. Adriaan Strauss, 1. Coenie Oosthuizen.

Replacements – 16. Ryno Barnes, 17. Trevor Nyakane, 18. Ligtoring Landman, 19. Boom Prinsloo, 20 Sarel Pretorius, 21. Riaan Smit, 22. Rayno Benjamin.
