───   12:01 Tue, 21 May 2013

The President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Mr Jacob Zuma, has, on behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, expressed condolences to the government and the people of the United States of America (USA) following a devastating tornado that has ripped through parts of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Said President Zuma: "We mourn with the Government and the people of the USA, particularly the affected families in Oklahoma City, as they come to terms with the effects of the devastating tornado that has ripped through parts of the city, leaving behind a trail of destruction and death."

President Zuma added: "The Government and the people of South Africa sympathise with and share the grief of those that have lost their loved ones as a result of this tragedy."

South Africa and the United States enjoy cordial diplomatic relations, characterised by frequent high-level visits and exchanges. In June 2013, President Jacob Zuma will host his USA counterpart, His Excellency President Barack Obama, who is expected to lead a high-level diplomatic and trade delegation to South Africa.
