Kimberley - The Sol Plaatje municipality has started replacing thousands of prepaid electricity meters in Kimberley to curb losses of about R3 million a month. Sello Matsie, municipal spokesperson, says the municipality is experiencing a high incidence of tampering and by-passing of meters. He says the number of known meters being by-passed stands at about 1 200, while the total number of meters tampered with is estimated at 5 000. He said this is costing the council in excess of R3 million a month. Matsie says the new meters contain technology which could help stop the problem.
The project started in the informal settlements of Kutlwanong, Beaconsfield, and Southridge.
