Sanral welcomes passage of e-toll bill | News Article
Sanral has welcomed the passage of a bill by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) critical to the introduction of e-tolls.

The passing of the bill allows for Transport Minister Ben Martins to make regulations regarding e-tolling.

Sanral CEO Nazir Alli says the bill enhances the legislative framework for the implementation of projects with electronic tolling.

He says traffic volumes on Gauteng's freeways have been increasing steadily before improvements were made.

This results in a 50 percent reduction in travel time between Johannesburg and Pretoria on the N1 during peak hours.

Alli says the improvements show that e-tolls would benefit the economy.

Meanwhile Cosatu has planned protest marches against the bill for tomorrow morning in Johannesburg.

Police said the union federation does not have permission to protest, and its members will be on standby to ensure the action does not go ahead.
