Welkom learners protest over re-admission of Rastafarian girl─── SABRINA DEAN 07:48 Fri, 24 May 2013

Welkom - Pupils at Leseding Technical High School near Welkom refused to attend class this week over unhappiness with a dreadlocked Rastafarian learner’s re-admittance to the school. The protests come after the Bloemfontein High Court ordered the school to allow 13-year-old Lerato Radebe to attend class from Monday. The Grade 8 pupil has not been admitted to class since January because of her hair, which she wears as part of her Rastafarian faith. Thabong police spokesperson Mamello Mokhuoane says the situation appears to be back to normal but is still being monitored by the school’s Adopt-A-Cop.
The SABC reported that the protest was initiated by the School Governing Body. The report quoted the SGB as saying there would be no learning as long as Radebe attends classes. The Free State education department could not yet be reached for comment.
