Chris Morris replaces Morkel in the Champions Trophy─── 13:50 Fri, 07 Jun 2013
The ICC has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 has approved Chris Morris as a replacement player for Morne Morkel in the South Africa squad for the tournament.
Morkel suffered an injury to his left quad during South Africa’s opening match of the tournament against India in Cardiff on Thursday. South Africa’s next match is against Pakistan in Birmingham on Monday 10 June.
The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad.
Proteas paceman, Morne Morkel, will miss the remainder of the ICC Champions Trophy due to a Grade 1 quad muscle strain he sustained during the opening match of the tournament against India in Cardiff on Thursday.
Proteas Team Manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee said: “Morne had a MRI scan done on him last night and it confirmed a Grade 1 injury to his left qaudricep muscle. His recovery time will take almost three weeks because the scan also detected a tear to the connecting tissue that surrounds the muscle which is called a myofascial tear, so that rules him out of the tournament.
Moosajee also gave an update on Dale Steyn: “Dale as we know is a work in progress, the challenge for us is that we can only get him bowling once he is completely symptom free. If you allow fast bowlers to bowl too early you can aggravate the injury and go back to square one. Brandon Jackson our physiotherapist is working hard on him and we are taking it day by day, we will get a better indication of where he is at tomorrow at our net session in Birmingham.”
