Bloemfontein – Bafana Bafana’s 2-1 loss to Ethiopia in Addis Ababa yesterday may not be the end of the road for the South Africans quest to compete in the 2014 Football World Cup in Brazil.
This comes after FIFA have opened an investigation in the East Africans fielding an ineligible players during the World Cup Qualifications.
Ethiopia’s match against Botswana, in which they beat our northern neighbours 2-1 as well has come under the attention of the games world governing body.
Furthermore, Equatorial Guinea and Togo have also come under scrutiny for their wins over Cameroon and the Cape Verde Islands respectively.
In earlier inquests - Burkina Faso, Sudan and Gabon were found guilty of fielding ineligible players and had points deducted.
If teams are found guilty of breaching this protocol, the match result gets overturned giving the opponents a victory and any points gained in the match by the offending team will be deducted.
South Africa and Botswana could still top the group and qualify for the play-offs, should the East Africans be found guilty of breaching protocol.
