Bloemfontein - Former St. Andrew's Bloemfontein pupil, Chris Froome, won the 100th Tour de France yesterday, when the riders road into a floodlit Paris.

Froome who was born in Kenya, grew up in South Africa and attended St. Andrew's in Bloemfontein for a portion of his schooling.

Froome, however left the school in 2000 to resume his education at St. Johns on Johannesburg.

In 2007 Froome turned professional at the age of 22 with Team Konica Minolta. He moved to Europe to further his career, joining the British-based team, Barloworld.

In 2010 he moved to Team Sky and he has become one of the team's key cyclists. Froome made his breakthrough as a Grand Tour contender during the 2011 Vuelta a España where he finished second overall.

St. Andrews' School headmaster, Christopher Thomas told Ofm Sport, that despite Froome attending the school for a short while, they will certainly recognise his achievement. Thomas went on to say they are very proud that Froome is a Saints' Old Boy.

In the earlier stages of this years’ greatest cycle race across France, Daryl Impey also became the first South African to win the coveted yellow jersey.

Despite Germany’s Marcel Kittel winning yesterday day’s last stage, Froome had a more than five minute lead over his nearest rival, Nairo Quintana of Columbia.

Race debutant Quintana, who moved up to second place thanks to his maiden stage win at the summit finish of Annecy-Semnoz on Saturday, secured the race's white jersey for the best young rider and the best climber's polka dot jersey.

Slovakian Peter Sagan won competition's green jersey for the second successive year.
