Bloemfontein - Royal Canin says it has put a stop to sponsorship of any events in the Ukraine after it emerged that a bear baiting competition was held at a dog show it had sponsored.

Royal Canin South Africa spokesperson Michelle Christie says they unreservedly condemn the practice of bear baiting.

Christie says they sponsor numerous dog shows around the world and never expected anything like this to emerge, especially since one of their core values is trying to promote responsible pet ownership.

She says the company has terminated all contracts with regard to supporting dog shows in the Ukraine.

Bear baiting involves attacking a chained brown bear with dogs. Two to three dogs are sent to attack the bear at ten minute intervals over several hours, with points being awarded and the most aggressive dog declared the final winner.
