U.N. chief calls Madiba a "giant for justice"─── 04:37 Fri, 06 Dec 2013
Johannesburg - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says Nelson Mandela was "a giant for justice" whose "selfless struggle for human dignity, equality and freedom" inspired many people around the world.
Ban was speaking soon after Mandela's death was announced last night. He said he was deeply touched when he met Mandela in South Africa in February 2009.
The U.N. Security Council interrupted a meeting and stood for a minute in silent tribute to Mandela.
Its General Assembly in 2009 adopted a resolution declaring Nelson Mandela International Day, the first ever international day in honour of an individual.
It's celebrated every year on July 18, Madiba's birthday.
Meanwhile George Bizos, human rights lawyer and Madiba's longtime friend expressed his grief at the news.
Wits rector Adam Habib told eNCA that Mandela wanted inclusive economy and society.
