There are hopes that the wide release of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in the US will see the internationally acclaimed biopic crack the top-five box office charts.
According to TNA, the film opened in an additional 850 locations across the US on Christmas Day and is in competition with the likes of The Wolf of Wall Street, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and sports comedy Grudge Match.
Lead actor Idris Elba has received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of the world renowned former statesman, who passed away on December 5 at the age of 95.
The film also received Golden Globe nominations for best original score and best song, as well as two London Critics' Circle Film Awards recognizing Naomi Harris for her portrayal of Winnie Mandela.
