Bloemfontein - The Free State's top acedemic school, Jim Fouché High, is mourning the death of one of its Afrikaans teachers. Deonette Basson (49) and her mother, Christine Basson, were killed in a accident involving a taxi and a truck near Leeu Gamka last night.

Deonette was visiting her father in De Doorns in the Western Cape and was heading back to Bloemfontein to be in time for a matric school camp this weekend.

JF's principal Schalk Malherbe says Basson taught there for several years, and always had a strong bond with her matric classes.

Basson was unmarried and had no children.

Malherbe says her learners were like her own children and on Wednesday, when schools reopens, will take the news of her untimely death with heavy hearts.
