Bloemfontein - The South African women’s hockey team took a 1-0 lead in the six-test series against Belgium when they thumped the 14th seeded visitors 6-0 in the first test played at the Hartleyvale Hockey Stadium in Cape Town.

The Proteas lead the match 3-0 after just 17 minutes, but had to wait until well into the second half to extend their lead.

Sulette Damons and Celia Evans both scored a brace of goals of the hosts, while Kathleen Taylor and Ilse David each scored one.

The second and third tests will be played tomorrow and Wednesday evening, also at Hartleyvale.
