Rwanda expels six SA diplomats

───   08:30 Sat, 08 Mar 2014

Pretoria - South Africa and Rwanda issued tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions yesterday, as a row escalated over the attempted assassination of an exiled Rwandan general in Johannesburg.

Kigali expelled six South African diplomats, after Pretoria gave three Rwandan officials 72 hours to leave the country. Rwanda's Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said on Twitter that the country expelled six South African diplomats in reciprocity and concern at South Africa's harbouring of dissidents responsible for terrorist attacks in Rwanda.

Diplomatic sources say the Rwandan envoys are suspected of being linked to an assassination attempt on the Johannesburg-based former Rwandan army boss Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa. Nyamwasa has already survived two assassination attempts.
