Port Elizabeth - TB continues to be the country's number one cause of death, followed by flu and pneumonia. That's according to the findings from death notifications in South Africa in 2011.
Stats SA says the results from the 2011 death notices indicate that mortality continues to decline and this trend has been observed since 2007. Stats SA says while TB remains the number one cause of death, the proportion of deaths due to TB has decreased in the recent past.
The provinces where the highest proportion of deaths occurred were KwaZulu-Natal at 20.7 percent, Gauteng 19.9 percent and the Eastern Cape is third highest at 14.4 percent. Stats SA's Maletela Tuoane-Nkhasi.
She says they've also seen an increase, albeit at a slower rate, of deaths due to non-communicable diseases.
