Bloemfontein - Four-time Cape Epic champion Karl Platt of Germany and his Swiss teammate Urs Huber yesterday took the lead despite a crash and a very muddy hike on the second day of the eight-day mountain bike race for the leader's yellow jersey.
They finished second on the day, a little more than two minutes behind a Robert Mennen of Germany and Kristian Hynek of the Czech Republic finishing the 101km round-stage in Robertson in a time of 4 hours 12 minutes and 17 seconds.
It was enough for Platt and Huber to claim a one minute and nine seconds lead.
Today's 134km third stage takes the riders from Robertson to Greyton.
