Friend bags four to give the Knights the edge

───   08:55 Fri, 28 Mar 2014

Quinton Friend's four-wicket haul kept the Chevrolet Knights' title tilt on track, as they shaded the first day of their Sunfoil Series clash with the Titans at SuperSport Park on Thursday.

Roelof Van der Merwe scored an entertaining 87 from just 91 deliveries after coming in at number four for the Titans as they reached the close of play on 268 for seven.

Van der Merwe's half-century was crucial to the Titans’ total after they had fallen to 88 for four with Friend playing a key role in the Knights’ charge.

The Titans elected to bat first after winning the toss and handed a debut to 23-year-old Ernest Kemm, while Johan van der Wath passed a fitness test for the Knights, although they continue to be captained by Werner Coetsee.

Friend ensured that Kemm’s first innings at the top level was brief when he had the opener caught behind for three, while Van der Wath accounted for Henry Davids.

Heino Kuhn was then dismissed by Coetsee for 37 shortly before lunch, and after the break Friend got the better Qaasim Adams to put the Knights’ title tilt right on track.

However, Van der Merwe decided to take the attack to the visitors and added 95 runs in 20 overs with Mangaliso Mosehle with an innings that included 13 fours.

The partnership was broken by Friend when he had Van der Merwe caught behind, and five overs later Mosehle was also back in the hut when he fell to Corne Dry for 42.

At 205 for six there was a risk of the Titans being bowled out on the first day, but Shaun von Berg and David Wiese put on 63 to carry the innings along.

Von Berg (32) was out to what turned out to be the penultimate ball of the day when he was caught off the bowling of Friend, who finished the day with figures of 4 for 55.

Wiese was unbeaten on 24 at the close of play.
