Vavi: Another suspension would be unfair

───   13:52 Tue, 08 Apr 2014

Johannesburg - As he prepares to come face to face with his political opponents in a special top-level Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) meeting this morning, the federation's general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says he doesn't believe he will be suspended for a second time.

Last week the High Court in Johannesburg ruled that Vavi’s suspension last year was illegal.

He was suspended for having sex with a junior Cosatu employee at work.

This is expected to be a difficult meeting as Vavi will be in the same room with the group of people who tried to suspend him.

But he believes they won’t be able to try it again because it’s not on the formal agenda.

“Even if they were to use the court processes and preferred to sneak it in, without me being given an opportunity, it would be unfair. It would be unprocedural. It would be illegal.”

However, the real fight could be over the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa)’s future.

If suspended the union could decide to leave Cosatu for good, taking eight other unions with it.
