Amcu strike fund gets cash injection: report

───   08:52 Wed, 16 Apr 2014

Rustenburg - A strike fund set up by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has received R1 million, The New Age reported on Wednesday.

The fund was created to assist platinum mineworkers who have been on a wage strike since January.

Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa told the publication that the union had donated R1m to the Amcu Strike Fund account opened on Monday, while a sum of R50,000 was donated by union officials and staff members.

Some of the struggling employees were reportedly selling their livestock and other assets to make ends meet, the newspaper reported.

If the R1,050,000 were to be divided among the 25,000 striking workers, each would get R42, according to the report.
The union had overseas donors who were willing to "throw in thousands of dollars," Mathunjwa was quoted as saying.

The Amcu members are on strike for a basic monthly salary of R12,500. They rejected a wage offer of up to nine percent from platinum producers.
