Transport Minister: Clamp down on unfit drivers

───   07:56 Thu, 17 Apr 2014

Johannesburg - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters says clamping down on unfit drivers would help reduce road deaths in South Africa.
She says her department believes the people who drive freight and passenger transport on the ground need to be subjected to what the aviation sector is subjected to.

Peters addressed a summit on aviation medicine training and research run by the SA Civil Aviation Authority, the Institute for Aviation Medicine and four institutions of higher education yesterday.

In her address, she said that pilots undergo regular medical check-ups, but many people who drive buses, trains and freight are not examined frequently. She said the drivers should undergo fitness checks every six months.
