Some of the occupants were still trapped in the twisted metal of their cars.
The couple's 13-year-old son suffered critical injuries while three occupants of the other vehicle all escaped with minor injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, three people were also killed and five others injured when their vehicle overturned on the R26 near Fouriesburg.

Three people died on the scene.
