Bloemfontein-based athlete, Norman Modise, won a gold and bronze medal at the 2014 South African Masters Athletics Championships (SAMA) held in Rustenburg from the 25-26 April 2014.

Approximately 400 athletes from the 11 athletic provinces of South Africa gathered for the meeting at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in the North West.

Modise, who was the only Free Stater in his category, participated in three events  - the 5000m, 10 000m as well as the 3000m.

“Masters Championships are exciting. The event itself is just irresistible. You get to compete against the country’s top class athlete. It pushes you to do well which is good,” he told OFM Sport.

Modise only managed a fifth spot in the 5000m race, which was contested by 25 athletes.

The second day of the meet saw Modise take part in the 10 000m where he clinched the bronze medal.

After losing out to the gold in the 10 000m, it all came down to the third and final event, the 3 000m, where he bagged the gold.

“It was not easy, but I am glad I managed to come back with a gold medal,” Modise said.

With the Masters resuming in November he will now shift his focus on the marathons. Modise will be action in July 9 at Kwazulu-Natal Championships (Durban).
