Bloemfontein - The Free State U18 side have kicked of their Craven Week campaign in Middelburg, Mpumalanga with a resounding 33-20 win over the traditionally strong Golden Lions.
In the first half the teams were tied at 10-10 as they each scored only one forward-dominated try in the half.
The Free State, however, did well to capitalise on their point-scoring chances in the second half and managed to power their way into the lead.
Each side scored three sides, but the educated boot of, Lourens Steenkamp, made the difference by landing all three try conversions, as well as four penalties.
The Gauteng side in their turn landed just one conversion and one penalty.
Other results from the second day saw Eastern Province edge the Blue Bulls 26-25, the Valke upset Boland 30-24, the Leopards hammered Namibia 53-13 and Griquas thumped the Border Country Districts 96-0.
