Samwu members vow not to back off

Sasolburg - Some of the striking Samwu members in Sasolburg have vowed not to return to work despite the Metsimaholo municipality's warning that they would face disciplinary action.

The municipality gave the striking members of the South African Municipal Workers Union an ultimatum that unless they returned to work by yesterday, they would face strict disciplinary action.

Samwu’s local chairperson, Sandla Mahlathi, says some of their members received termination of contract letters from the municipality on Thursday.

He says Samwu hasn't received any written communication from the municipality regarding the ultimatum.

Mahlathi says none of the 59 people arrested for public violence in Zamdela after nearly 80 shops were looted, were Samwu members.

Workers claim the municipality has failed to heed their complaints relating to the filling of vacant posts. They say temporary employees are not given first preference.

Metsimaholo has been hit by a number of strikes and service delivery protests in the recent past. Two municipal buildings were torched during strikes in July last year.
