Anni Dewani's killer may appeal parole: report

───   07:20 Wed, 23 Jul 2014

Cape Town - The Department of Justice and Correctional Services says one of the men convicted for British newlywed Anni Dewani's murder may appeal its decision not to grant him medical parole.

Xolile Mngeni's medical parole was denied by Minister Michael Masutha on Tuesday.

He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2011, a year later he received a life sentence for the murder of honeymoon bride, Dewani.

The trigger man in the 2010 killing applied for medical parole last month but his application was denied.

The department’s Mthunzi Mhaga explains.

“There is no appropriate arrangement for Mr Mngeni’s supervision, care and treatment at the home where he would be released to. He is allowed to take the matter on review.”

Dewani was killed while in Cape Town on her honeymoon and her husband Shrien is believed to be the mastermind behind her murder.

He was extradited to South Africa from the United Kingdom in April, to stand trial on the Western Cape High Court.

Shrien is said to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

His trial is expected to start on 6 October, should Dewani be deemed mentally sound.

The state has just 18 months to bring him to trial or he’ll be sent back to Britain.
