FS govt took precautions before sending students abroad | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Free State government says it took precautionary measures before it sent 58 students to study in China in order to avoid a situation similar to when it sent students to Cuba.

Provincial government spokesperson Setjhaba Maphalla said they wanted to ensure that no student was sent back home due to bad behaviour or because they fell pregnant.

Some students who were sent by government to study medicine in Cuba were sent back home after falling pregnant.

Maphalla says steps were taken to avoid a repeat of that situation.

The 58 students will study engineering, agriculture, accounting, financial management and information technology in China.

Earlier this month provincial government sent 27 students to China while in May an additional 154 students were sent to study in China.

A total of 237 Free State students will be studying at the Nanchang University in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, Wuyi University in Wuyishan, Nanping county in Fujian Province, and Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Jinshan, Fuzhou, in Fujian Province.
