SA hosts emergency meeting over Lesotho political crisis | News Article

Maseru - South Africa hosted an emergency meeting of regional leaders yesterday to negotiate a peace deal for Lesotho.

The double troika summit comes after an attempted coup at the end of August and stalled peace talks between deadlocked political parties.

The parties failed to meet a Friday deadline for a fresh peace deal, prompting South Africa to call an emergency meeting of regional leaders.

President Jacob Zuma and Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, president of Botswana Ian Khama, Lesotho prime minister Thomas Thabane and deputy prime minister Mothetjoa Metsing were among those in attendance.

After the summit concluded, after 10pm, SADC executive secretary Stergomena Lawrence Tax addressed the media.

Tax explained that the summit urged leaders of the coalition government to uphold their commitments to restore normalcy.
