Zambian president hospitalised in New York City | News Article

New York - Police say Zambia's president has been taken to a hospital in New York City.

Michael Sata had flown to New York from Lusaka to attend the annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly. He did not deliver a scheduled address to the 193-member world body Wednesday.

New York Deputy Police Chief Kim Royster said Sata was treated at his hotel by U.S. State Department doctors on Thursday and then taken to a hospital. She had no details on his condition.

Sata, who is about 77, became Zambia's fifth president in 2011 after three failed attempts. He is known as a staunch advocate for the poor and an opponent of Chinese investment in Zambia's mines.

Sata went to Israel for medical treatment in June.
