MSF likely to continue Ebola relief efforts into 2015 | News Article

Bloemfontein - Doctors Without Borders (MSF) says although there has been a slight increase in deployment of international aid to Ebola stricken West Africa in recent weeks, the outbreak is still at critical proportions.

MSF spokesperson Borrie La Grange said in a statement the Ebola death toll on 29 October was at just over 4900, with just under 14 000 cases registered in Guinea, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Mali.

He says the situation is particularly dire in Sierra Leone, where there has been a significant surge in cases in recent weeks. He says every district in Sierra Leone is now infected and five have been placed under Government quarantine.

According to La Grange, the high death toll is also resulting in an increased number of orphans in need of support.

MSF has budgeted €51 million, which is about R705-million, for its 2014 West Africa Ebola response and says it is currently calculating operational budgets to continue its response in 2015.
