The Ebola outbreak: One year on | News Article

Bloemfontein - This week (March 22) marked a year since the first case of Ebola, one of the deadliest killers Africa has seen, was reported.

Since then the World Health Organisation (WHO) has that revealed over 10 000 people have died from the virus, with at least 500 health workers also losing their lives while fighting the epidemic.

Bloemfontein Infectious Disease Specialist Dr Cloete Van Vuuren says dealing with Ebola became difficult because it was the first cross-border outbreak to occur.

Van Vuuren says one of the worst affected countries - Liberia - currently has the virus under control.

However, he says Guinea still has a big a problem as over the weeks Ebola cases have risen and are mainly unidentified and undiagnosed. Sierra Leone also seems to have the virus under control.
