Court bid to have al-Bashir arrested | News Article

Johannesburg - The Southern African Litigation Centre (SALC) has brought an urgent application in the High Court in Pretoria to compel South African authorities to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

According to lawyer Caroline James, the SALC wants him to be handed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes while he is still in South Africa.

Al-Bashir arrived in South Africa last night to attend the African Union summit underway in Sandton today.

The ICC called on South Africa to respect its obligations to co-operate with the court.

The President of the Assembly of States to the Rome Statute of the ICC, Sidiki Kaba, says two arrest warrants issued by the ICC against Al-Bashir remain outstanding.

Judge Hans Fabricious has granted an interim interdict to prevent al-Bashir from leaving the country. The court will re-assemble at 3pm this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Director for the Africa Research Center in London, David Hoile, told Jacaranda FM News that Bashir should not be arrested and that he also has diplomatic immunity.
