Bloemfontein - Security will be tightened for the New York City Marathon in the wake of the deadly Boston Marathon bomb blasts in April this year which killed 3 people and injuring an estimated 264.

The New York City Marathon's finish area will again fill with spectators, some carrying bags.

Organisers deemed it impractical to ban bags from the finish line, however, other measures will be put in place to sharpen security.

Last year's NYC Marathon never happened. The damage from Super-storm Sandy forced its cancellation, but not before many New Yorkers decried city and race officials' initial plans to go on with the event.

Thousands of entrants from around the world flew to the city, encouraged by those first assurances that the race was on.

The last big marathon of the year takes place on 3 November.
