Bloemfontein - The Boston Marathon celebrated its first American winner in 19 years with Meb Keflizighi crossing the line in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 37 seconds.
One year after a fateful bombing there killed three people and left more than 260 injured, Keflezighi added Boston to a resume that includes the New York City Marathon title in 2009 and a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics.
Rita Jeptoo of Kenya successfully defended the women's title she said she could not enjoy a year ago.
Meanwhile, veteran South Africa wheelchair racer Ernst van Dyk has made history when he became the first athlete to win 10 titles at the Boston Marathon.
Van Dyk dominated the 42km race from start to finish, winning in a time of 1 hour 20 minutes 36 seconds to clock his second fastest time at the race.
