SA takes double Comrades glory─── 11:54 Sun, 31 May 2015
Pietermaritzburg - Doing pushups after finishing the world's toughest road race in *5:38:34, South African Gift Kelehe from Rustenburg became the first man to cross the finish line in the 90th edition of the Comrades Marathon, this year run up from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
His brother Andrew has previously won the down run to Durban.
Kelehe had been identified as one of the pre-race favourites, having won three gold medals before. He went one step further this year, finishing seven minutes and 39 seconds ahead of second placed Ethiopian Mohammed Husien. Third went to South Africa's Hatiwande Nyamande.
Kelehe made his move to take the lead just outside of Camperdown with about 25km to go and he never looked back, powering his way up Polly Shorts to hold on for the most memorable day of his running career and a R375 000 cheque.
Caroline Wostmann from Pretoria became the first South African women to cross the finish line first since 1998. She won the women's race in a time of *6:12:16 seconds.
She won this year’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in 3:41:23. She was the first South African winner in 14 years, and the very first since the race became a real international event.
