The city council of Pikeville, Tennessee will find anyone wearing their pants “more than three inches below the top of the hips” guilty of public indecency, reported The Times Free Press.

Residents found guilty would have to pay a fine of “not less than $25 for a first offence” and “not more than $50 for subsequent offences,” according to the ordinance.

Aimed at public indecency in general, the city mayor said it would probably be a couple of months before the city would be able to put the law into effect.

According to the ordinance, the city of Pikeville finds “the exposure of a person's buttocks and genital area or undergarments is offensive and indecent” and “there is evidence that indicates that wearing sagging pants is injurious to the health of the wearer as it causes improper gait,” reported UPI.

State law already makes "indecent exposure" in schools illegal and the mayor was unclear as to how Pikeville's ordinance is different.

“All I know is we just don't want them running around half naked on our streets. That's the bottom line.”

The City of Crowley last year passed a sagging pants ordinance, said 99.9KTDY. The ordinance bans "the wearing of outer clothing sagging below the waist exposing the undergarments in public places or in public view".

A study in 2013 found that wearing pants too low can cause sexual dysfunction and a number of other serious health problems, reports Minorities.

This was the conclusion of the National American Medical Association following a two-year study.
