We don’t want to alarm you, but flying spiders exist… so please prepare to burn the planet down and move to a different one.

 

OK, they don’t actually fly, but rather glide.

 

Selenopid spiders live in the high trees of the South American rainforests, and therefore need to be able to have some sort of backup if they fall from the canopy.

 

That is why they developed the ability to execute a controlled and graceful glide.

 

Using their front legs to ‘steer’, the selenopid spiders glide onto a tree brunch or trunk before hitting the ground.

 
Obviously this is to save them from any predators lurking on the forest floor, however if you think they are going to be decent enough to avoid landing on your head you have drastically underestimated them.
