Bloemfontein - Eighty-six percent of agricultural land in the Free State is owned by white farmers, 1,66% by black farmers, 1,68% is part of land reform projects and another 5,31 % is probably in state hands. There might be more land reform projects, but this could not be verified.

This is according to Free State Agri’s land audit which was made public on the union’s annual congress in Bloemfontein today.

FS Agri president Dan Kriek said farmers should not panic about these figures. It was expected.

He said some of the reasons for this is the fact that the department of rural development has spent only 1% of its budget for land reform in the province, there were only a few land claims and black farmers have sold farms in the province.

He said Agri Free State will refine these figures and facts with the help of the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) and will then approach government with a plan of a public private partnership to speed up land reform and transformation.
