Bloemfontein -  South Africa has won the toss and elected to bat first in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

With the track becoming more difficult as the match progresses, it was a good toss for new captain Hashim Alma to win.

Openers, Alviro Peterson and Dean Elgar got the side off to a solid start with the match reached their 50 partnership in the 11.2 overs.

The was a short break in play after Elgar pulled the ball straight into the face of Kaushal Silva, who was under the helmet while fielding at short-leg.

Shortly after the break, off-spinner, Dilruwan Pereramade, got the breakthrough for the home side by trapping Peterson lbw for 34 with the score on 70 in the 17th over.

The former Chevrolet Knights batsman, Elgar continued South Africa’s good start by reaching his 2nd Test fifty.

Elgar and Du Plessis lead the Proteas to 111/1 at lunch, with Elgar on 62* and Du Plessis on 17*.
