Coetsee named as new Chevrolet Knights skipper | News Article

31-Year-old Chevrolet Knights all-rounder, Werner Coetsee, has been appointed as the new captain for the franchise for the 2014/15 cricket season.

The off-spinner who has 267 first class wickets to his name fills the role left vacant by Johan van der Wath at the end of last season following the former Proteas fast bowlers’ retirement from cricket.

Coetsee and batsman, Pite van Biljon, were the two players short listed for the job.

The player who has previously represented the Netherlands and the Lions, is no stranger to the role after leading the side four times during their successful Sunfoil Series campaign last season, where they finished as runners-up.

One of the biggest challenges Coetsee will face from the outset is help rebuild the team which saw three of its stalwarts leave at the end of last season, these players being Ryan McLaren, Dean Elgar and Van der Wath.

Coetsee told OFM Sport that it’s a big loss to lose those players, but he feels the players will be motivated enough for the season, however feels steering them in the right direction is the best way of getting the best out of his team.

“The biggest challenge will be alignment or discipline,” said Coetsee.

“Getting the team to execute one thing  or plan and getting to the guys to do that, will be the challenge,” he added.

The new skipper who has a double century to his name in first class cricket, said he will be tapping into the wealth of experience players such as Rilee Rossouw and Quinton Friend have to offer.

Van Biljon, who lost out on the leadership role, has been appointed at the team vice-captain.
