Proteas resume innings today | News Article

Johannesburg - The Protea’s Hashim Amla and AB De Villiers will resume the innings against West Indies today.

Stiaan van Zyl will continue to bide his time for his debut innings, after becoming the 84th capped player for South Africa since re-admission.

By the close yesterday the Proteas had reached 340/3 in 91 overs with both Amla – his 23rd Test century – and De Villiers – the fifth South African to reach the landmark of 20 Test centuries – having completed three-figure scores. They also established a South African fourth wicket partnership record – so far 287 – improving on the previous best of 249 by Jacques Kallis and Gary Kirsten, also against the West Indies, at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in 2003.

Russell Domingo, the Protea coach, is full of praise for Amla and De Villiers, whose record-breaking performance has further established their rank as the best of their generation and probably two of the best in the world. The Proteas know however that  if the South Africa-West Indies series ends in a draw and Australia wins all four Tests against India, Australia will claim the top spot by 0.2 ratings points, with South Africa falling to second on the world international cricket log.

At the moment Australia is at 142 for 3 and is chasing India’s 408 for 10.
