Tuks win inaugural Varsity Cricket─── 08:31 Mon, 09 Feb 2015
The University of Pretoria Tuks were crowned as the Varsity Cricket champions after beating the University of Stellenbosch Maties in the final of the inaugural tournament in Potchefstroom.
Tuks comfortably beat the University of Johannesburg in the first semi-final played at Senwes Park, while the Maties shocked hosts the North West University Pukke to secure their spot in the championship match.
Maties won the toss and elected to bat first and scores 125 for 7 off their allotted 20 over in the blistering Potchefstroom heat.
Jean Marais top scored for Maties with 33 while Leon le Roux added 32.
A fine batting performance from Gerald Pike, who hit 50 off 38 and Heinrich Klaasen, whose lower order blitz yielded 37 off 20, helped Tuks chase down the 126-run target set by Maties.
Tuks captain, Heinrich Claasen told OFM Sport that they will turn their focus to the SA Club Championship before looking towards their trip to India.
The win means Tukkies will represent South Africa at the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Final in India later this year.
