The unbeaten University of the Free State Shimlas have shot to the top of the log in the Varsity Cup after a hard fought win over Maties in Bloemfontein.
Niel Marais and captain AJ Coetzen each crossed the white wash in the first half in response to the two tries by the visitors to take the score to 16-16 at the break.
The deadlocked was broken in the 74th minute when replacement Daniel Maartens scored the home side’s 3rd try for a 21-16 win.
In Potchefstroom, North West University Pukke ran out 42-37 winners over the University of Pretoria Tuks to hand the two-time champions their first loss of the season.
In Port Elizabeth UJ proved to be too strong for the Madibaz with a 42-13 away win, while in Cape Town the CUT Ixias are becoming the tournaments whipping boys after another heavy loss.
Dean Kouprihanoff’s late try was CUT’s only points against the UCT Ikeys who scored 11 tries for a comprehensive 90-8 win at the Green Mile.
