The war of words has begun…

As expected the Australians fired the only salvo ahead of Sunday’s Cricket World Cup final in Melbourne, where they will face New Zealand.

Yesterday the Aussies made light work of beating India by 95 runs in Sydney to knock the champions out of the World Cup.

Four months ago, India arrived in Australia with both the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the World Cup, and takes to Steve Smith they will be jetting back home empty handed.

The Black Caps last played against Australia in an One-Day International at the MCG six years ago and overall have won just four of their 19 against the Aussies at the ground.

Speaking after their win yesterday, Australia skipper Michael Clarke warned that the MCG and the Black Caps aren’t friends and added that their one wicket loss to the Kiwis was their turning point in the match.

Apart from India who were spicy hot during the tournament, the Black Caps are by far the form team of the tournament, and who would have thought that just nine months ago the team weren’t event considered as contenders, let alone time favourites.

Steve Smith’s ton yesterday saw him take his tournament tally to 346 runs in six innings, but he is still well short of the Black Caps Martin Guptill on 532 in eight knocks.

Australian skipper Michael Clark said he is not surprised that Smith is their leading scorer in the tournament.

Mitchell Starc’s two for 28 in nine overs saw him move to within one wicket of New Zealand’s Trent Boult as the leading wicket taker at the tournament on 21 wickets.

This morning Boult spoke of the excitement in the Kiwis camp and said that it’s a dream come true will all New Zealand boys either warning to be an All Black or a Black Cap when they grow-up, and playing in a World Cup final against Australia is   just the cherry on the cake.

Sunday’s morning big final at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground gets underway at 5:30am.
