Grain producers need to retain crop ownership─── SABRINA DEAN 17:00 Fri, 06 Mar 2015
Producers of winter grains such as wheat and barley have resolved to try and put crop ownership back in the hands of producers to enable them to operate more effectively and profitably in the free market system.
Bothaville - This was during the Winter Grain Committee’s working group session at the annual Grain SA Congress in Bothaville this week.
Committee Chairperson Andries Theron says at present, between 80% and 85% of farmers do not actually own their crops and therefore cannot take advantage of fluctuations in the cash market:

The committee heard that greater transparency is necessary, also in terms of transport, chemical and other industry inputs.
During his closing address to the Congress, Grain SA Chairperson Louw Steytler also told delegates they will be investigating alternatives to Safex in the wake of the futures exchange’s indications that it does not intend phasing out the use of the location differential in determining commodity prices.
