Cold, wet weather could spell turn-around for wheat prospects | News Article

Bloemfontein - The sudden arrival of colder wet weather in the Cape could spell a turn-around for what was looking to be a dismal year for wheat producers.

Grain SA senior economist Corné Louw says wheat producers have been highly stressed, with some having planted in dry conditions in the hope that winter rains would arrive in time. He says concerns were especially high in the Swartland region of the Western Cape, which has not had any rain since September last year.

Louw says, however, that Western Cape wheat producers are breathing a sigh of relief at the onset of the cooler wet weather, which is painting a much brighter outlook for this year’s wheat crop.
