Bloemfontein - Germany’s Martin Kaymer, fired a five under par,65 to record the lowest opening round of the US Open at Pinehurst.
The 29-year old from Dusseldorf silenced many of his critics with a victory last month at the Players Championship, his first US or European title since 2011.
Kaymer said he had been letting the pressure of a long win drought affect him before winning the Players.
Following his round, Kaymer said the course had a lot to offer.
Zimbabwe’s Brendon de Jonge, is three shots off the lead in tied 2nd, while Charl Schwartzel, is the leading South African in the first, after firing a par round for tied 16th.
